Lent 2020

As we prepare for Lent 2020, some info for your schedule:

- Ash Wednesday: February 26th 2020, join us for a service to begin the journey of Lent at either 10am or 7pm.

- The Bishop’s Lent Book for 2020 is ‘Inspired’ by Rachel Held Evans. Copies of the book are available from the Parish Office or after Sunday services priced $17.

- On Sundays during Lent we will have a sermon series entitled ‘Why Jesus’ and we’ll be looking for volunteers at the end of Lent to share some very brief words on camera on what Jesus means to them. If you are willing to volunteer please let Mike Deed know.

- At the Easter Vigil we will bless and dedicate a new Paschal Candle for the year 2020. If you would like to make a donation towards the cost of the candle (approx. $200) please put your money in an envelope clearly marked ‘Paschal Candle’ and pass it to the parish office. Much like Christmas flowers we will publish a list of thanksgivings in the Easter bulletin.

TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION - Friends & Neighbors of SAVE THE EVIDENCE cordially invite you to the closing presentation of their fourth season of lectures. The goal of the lecture series has been to educate people about, and to promote a community dialog about, the former Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School; and to raise funds for Woodland Cultural Center's ongoing Save the Evidence campaign. We are pleased to welcome you on March 24th, 2020 at the Sanderson Centre for an informative and fascinating talk by acclaimed journalist and author Tanya Talaga, as she discusses "Rights Before Reconciliation". This lecture is FREE to attend, however, registration is required, and you must print your own tickets. See the Sanderson Centre https://tickets.sandersoncentre.ca/TheatreManager/1/tmEvent/tmEvent1115.html

CAMP FUND - For a number of years St. James has sponsored children to Canterbury Hills Camp allowing them to experience a great outdoor week of fun and adventure. We would like to repeat this and send 2 seven-year old Syrian Children again. The cost will be $700 for them both. In previous years we have collected more than this from you generous souls; and if this happens again any extra money will be given to St. Matthew’s House to pay for children that they send to CHC. Please place those loonies/toonies or any small change in the green jar in the Narthex. Or if you can give more please put the money in an envelope with your name on, labelled camp fund, and place on the plate. Many thanks, Lynn Dykeman and Sue Carson.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR IDEAS on how to dispose of leftover stuff from the Garage Sale this year. The people who have done this for us in the past are no longer able to help us out. Please convey any ideas to either Carleon or Jill. Thank you.

SHROVE TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25TH There are sign-up sheets in the Narthex as we need servers and a team to wash the dishes. Thank you.

TAX RECEIPTS ARE NOW AVAILABLE - PLEASE PICK THEM UP FROM THE CHURCH TO HELP SAVE ON POSTAGE.

PRAYER OF THE WEEK

Bring us, O Lord God, at our last awakening into the house and gate of heaven to enter into that gate and dwell in that house, where there shall be no darkness nor dazzling, but one equal light; no noise nor silence, but one equal music; no fears nor hopes, but one equal possession; no ends nor beginnings, but one equal eternity; in the habitations of thy glory and domination, world without end.

John Donne (1572-1631)
