Monday Afternoon Games

First and third Monday of the month from 1:30-4pm, in the Parlour. Everyone is invited to participate, ladies or gentlemen. Any questions, please speak with Jill.

WEDNESDAY

COMPLINE – 9:15p.m. Compline is a short service of night prayer. The heart of Compline is the recitation of several psalms. There is a short reading from scripture, intercession, and time for reflection. It is a beautiful way to close out an active day. Compline is offered by St. James’ through Facebook to bring the community together. If you cannot join live, the service is available afterwards on St. James’ Facebook channel.

AUDIO ACCESSIBILITY FOR OUR CHURCH

We finally have the date correct – SUNDAY, September 20^th – for the regular service! Bettear audio accessibility technology provided by Waterfront Centre for Communication Accessibility will be with us. Bettear allows parishioners to receive audio directly from the church’s podium and sound system through their smartphone and compatible hearing aids, cochlear implants, headphones, or earbuds. Here are the details that will help you to access the technology which, from an earlier demonstration, was simply outstanding.

Before coming to church:

Download the free Bettear app: https://www.wavefrontcentre.ca/bettear onto your smartphone. Make sure your hearing aids or cochlear implants are Bluetooth-connected to your smartphone before coming to the church. Bring your smartphone and your hearing aids, cochlear implants, headphones, or earbuds.

On Sunday morning…

Open the Bettear app. Select the church’s audio channel. Connect your listening device. Adjust the volume to your preferred level.

On Sunday, September 20, there will be support at the church to help parishioners connect and test the system. The company welcomes your feedback on how well you can hear the sermon, readings, announcements, prayers, and other spoken content through the system.

This is your opportunity to provide input to the Corporation as they move towards assisting those with hearing issues to gain better access to all that our services have to offer.

A Note from our Music Director

Choir rehearsal started this week on Tuesday night, and I am very excited to begin working on new music together! We warmly welcome anyone who would like to join us.

Choir rehearsals are held every Tuesday evening from 7:30–9:00 p.m. and Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m.

Let’s work together to grow the music ministry at St. James and lift our voices to the Lord!

Hello Friends at St. James Church,

My name is Felicia. I am contacting you on behalf of the Dundas Museum. I wanted to personally invite you and your colleagues to join us for a KAIROS Blanket Exercises, led by Burning Stone Ministries, as we mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The Blanket Exercise is an interactive educational program that explores the history and ongoing impacts of colonization in Canada. It will take place on Monday, September 14 from 3 - 5 pm at the Dundas Museum.

Before sharing the invitation more broadly with the public, we’re reaching out personally to local nonprofit leaders and staff. We know it can be challenging to find time for professional development, so we wanted to create an opportunity for our local nonprofit community to learn and reflect together. We all have a shared responsibility to truth and reconciliation, and we hope you’ll be able to join us!

The event is free, and refreshments will be provided. Feel free to share this amongst your colleagues and church members!

The Season of Creation is the annual Christian celebration to pray and respond together to the cry of Creation. The ecumenical family around the world unites to contemplate and care for our common home, the Oikos of God. The Season’s “Celebration” begins on September 1, the day that several Christian denominations celebrate as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. It ends on October 4, the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, who is beloved by many Christian denominations. This year, we will unite around the theme “Living Water”, with the symbol “Immersion in Living Water”, inspired by Ezekiel 47: 9 and 12.

100th Anniversary - St. James Building

How is your detective searching going? Have you found any interesting photographs that you would like to share with your fellow parishioners or loan to the archives at St. James?

We are also looking for artifacts that you may have. T-shirts (remember the Phoenix?), St. James mugs and plates, art work, baptism or confirmation certificates, special bulletins, cookbooks, newspaper clippings, etc. These will be used for a display at St. James during the anniversary weekend. Please contact Janet Canon-Davison or Isabella Guthrie-McNaughton if you would like to contribute any items.

This week’s photograph depicts the original St. James, located on Hatt Street. It was closed when the new St. James on Melville Street was opened on September 5th, 1926.

Garden Project Update

Work on the Garden Project continues, with the irrigation system being installed by RainTree Irrigation Systems this week. Sprinkle heads and water lines are being installed in the lawn, near the Co-op playground, along the wooden fence area, in front of the parlour window and in the scatter garden – all areas that will have restored or new gardens. It will be exciting to see sketches of the planned gardens as we move into the next phase of the project. Next activities include the creation of a terrace wall in the scatter garden formed by armour stone followed by some education and conversation about columbariums! Stay tuned for more exciting details in the coming weeks.
